Philadelphia Youth Network Youthworks Summer Learning Plan
This is a six-week program designed to educate youth on environmental
issues that affect their quality of life at home, at school, in
the community, and at the work place. We will be addressing issues
concerning: recycling; water pollution and conservation; waste disposal;
air quality; nutrition; personal hygiene; safe food handling techniques;
public health; public safety; biological and plant evolution; urban
gardening and maintenance of open green spaces; and the standards
necessary to create and maintain a clean work place that is safe
from environmental hazards.
Community Land Trust Corporation (YouthWorks 2002 contractor) is
an organization that is dedicated to alleviating the conditions
of blight and distress, and to improving the quality of life through
environmental education about health and safety. Through CLTC's
many years of experience, we can well document the community's concern
and need for behavioral change as a means to reversing the trend
of blight within the neighborhoods.
At the start of the program, youth will be asked to respond to a
variety of questions concerning their knowledge and attitudes about
the environment. These responses will be kept on file and a similar
survey will be taken at the end of the program. In order to complete
this project, youth will be expected to answer he factual questions
correctly, and be able to speak knowledgeably about what actions
they can take to improve the environment and their own quality of
life. Comparison and improvement measures will be used to evaluate
the responses.
